Town Pursuing Reuse Water System Grant
Reuse Water System Project Would Preserve Drinking Water, Reduce Water Bills

The Town of Holly Springs recently applied for a grant from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund for the first phase of designing and building a reuse water system. Reuse water is specially treated municipal wastewater that is used primarily for irrigation. The Holly Springs reuse water system would provide cheaper water for irrigation to property owners along the system's route while conserving the Town's drinking water supply. In addition, for customers of the system, the reuse water supply would not be subject to restrictions in times of drought.

Phase I of the project would install a reuse water line in the streets in front of businesses, homes, parks and schools along the route on Irving Parkway, from Irving Parkway east on Holly Springs Road to Bass Lake Road, and along Bass Lake Road to connect to existing abandoned lines that the Town has preserved for this system. Taps to the reuse line would be voluntary. If the Town receives the grant, the first phase reuse water system would be operational within the next 18 months. Later phases of the reuse water system would install reuse water lines along other roadways in Town.

Currently, most Holly Springs property owners use drinking water for irrigation while the Town's wastewater is treated and discharged into existing natural waterways. The switch to using reuse water for irrigation would preserve drinking water, a valuable natural resource, while reducing property owners' water bills.

In order to aid efforts to secure a grant to fund a reuse water line in Holly Springs, the Town's Engineering Department mailed a survey to business owners along the proposed route to determine their level of interest in the project. To express interest in using reuse water for irrigation, or for more information, please contact the Engineering Department at 557-3938.
