Ribbon Cutting to be Held for Town Pump Maintenance Building
Speakers to Include US Representative David Price

It’s easy to overlook the importance of an operational wastewater treatment collection system, to take for granted that when water runs off dirty dishes or laundry and down the drain, that it’s taken to the Town’s Water Reclamation Facility and treated – instead of backing up on the curb, overflowing from manholes or sitting stagnant in the collection lines. Moving this water through the collection system to the reclamation facility requires a variety of pumps that must be maintained.

Thanks to the completion of the Town’s new Pump Maintenance Building – the first ever in Holly Springs – residents can continue to rest assured that their wastewater will continue to be safely conveyed to the reclamation plant without a glitch.

To celebrate the building’s opening, the Town is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday, August 16, at 10:30 a.m. Speakers will include Holly Springs Mayor Dick Sears, Holly Springs Assistant Town Manager Chuck Simmons, and US Representative David Price, who secured federal funding to upgrade the reclamation plant as part of the Town’s overall wastewater strategy. Light refreshments will be served, and tours of the Pump Maintenance Building and the Water Reclamation Facility will be given following the ceremony. The public is invited to attend.

“The federal funding we’ve secured to upgrade the plant – along with the construction of the new pump maintenance building – will help Holly Springs look toward the future,” said Price. “I’m proud of the forward-looking approach of the community’s leaders, and I’m glad to be part of the effort.”

Although the Pump Maintenance Building address is 850 West Ballentine Street, follow directional signs to reach the event by turning left onto Treatment Plant Road off West Ballentine Street on the west side of the NC 55 Bypass (see map below).

The 3,600-square-foot Pump Maintenance Building was completed this spring and includes offices and a spacious work area to be used by Town staff to repair equipment, mainly wastewater collection system pumps. The Town has 21 pump stations that work continuously to convey the 900,000 gallons of wastewater generated in Holly Springs each day to the reclamation plant. Before the building was constructed, Town staff repaired pumps and other equipment outside, often on the beds of Town trucks.

“Having this building is important,” said Thomas Tillage, director of Holly Springs Public Utilities, who oversees the Water Reclamation Facility and collection system. “Our employees needed an indoor area to repair and maintain this essential equipment.”

Tillage said that pump repair work often is detail-oriented and dependent on a clean work area. Working outside, employees had to be extremely cautious; if the wind stirred up dust and the dirt got into ball bearings in the pump, the bearings had to be replaced.

The $204,226 Pump Maintenance Building project included extensive grading, road relocation and paving of the road leading to the reclamation plant. Commercial Design Services designed the project and oversaw construction.
