Ribbon Cutting to Celebrate Replacement of Bridge Fran Destroyed
Holly Springs and NC DOT Officials to Ride Bikes Over Bridge as Part of Ceremony

HOLLY SPRINGS, NC-To celebrate the completion of a long-anticipated bridge replacement project on Lockley Road in Holly Springs, Town and NC Department of Transportation (DOT) officials are planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Lockley Road is a loop road that connects with both Holly Springs Road and Sunset Lake Road. The Lockley Road bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Fran, interrupting traffic flow within the neighborhood.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which is to be held May 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the bridge, Town and NC DOT officials will ride bicycles over the bridge. The bicycles are donated for the occasion by Cycling Spoken Here, a bicycling store in Apex.

The original bridge on Lockley Road was privately maintained. Engineers blame the bridge’s failure on undersized piping that was inadequate to handle the creek’s flow during periods of heavy rain, as was experienced during Hurricane Fran. The new DOT bridge design is a double boxed culvert. The Town is to take over maintenance of the road and bridge now that the DOT has completed the bridge replacement.
