4/23/04 May 1 is the Day for Dogs at Womble Park Dogs and dog owners will not want to miss what has been dubbed “the social event of the year for dogs” May 1 in Womble Park. Last year, nearly 80 dogs participated in the Town Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Dog Walk in the Park, an event that began years ago as a way for dog owners to socialize and for the Town to encourage responsible dog-ownership. Now in its fourth year, the Dog Walk in the Park has become an anticipated annual event. The event will include a dog walk; a bark, beg and roll-over contest; demonstrations; doggie door prizes; a blessing of the dogs; and an opportunity to microchip pets at a reduced rate. The event is centered at the picnic shelter in Womble Park and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. After registration and a walk around the park pathway, the Holly Springs Public Safety K9 Unit will perform a forensic search and seizure demonstration from 10:30-11 a.m. Officer Brian Lischin and dog Apache, along with Officer Chris Poston and dog Ranger, will perform the demonstration, and Holly Springs Animal Control Officer Eddie Holland will be on hand, as well. From 11 -11:30 a.m., K9 Solutions will present a high-obedience search and rescue demonstration and discuss how dogs can earn the AKC K9 Good Citizen title. From 11:30 a.m.-noon, local residents and their dogs are invited to participate in the b ark, beg and rollover contest, sponsored by Arbor Creek Animal Hospital. Doggie door prizes – including biscuits, bones, leashes, gift certificates and more – will be awarded. The event will conclude with a blessing of the dogs by Holly Springs United Methodist Church. Marcia Schroer, Parks and Recreation Department leisure program supervisor and organizer of the Dog Walk in the Park, said that the event is held because of the popularity of dog ownership in Holly Springs. “I think pet ownership is a real valuable, important leisure-time hobby and pursuit, and Holly Springs has a lot of dog owners,” Schroer said.
