Board of Commissioners to Change Name to Town Council
From Commissioners to Councilmen; Name Change for Accuracy

Beginning June 25, the group of elected officials that comprise Holly Springs’ governing body will be referred to by a new name – the Holly Springs Town Council. Likewise, individual council members will be referred to as councilmen or council members.

Before, the Holly Springs governing body was called the Town Board of Commissioners. The term “council” more accurately depicts the duties of Holly Springs councilmen today. When Holly Springs was established in 1876, individual elected commissioners presided over different areas of duties, such as parks and recreation or finance. As the Town grew, the commissions or committees the Town commissioners managed were replaced by Town staff and departments; and, for decades, Holly Springs elected officials have instead governed at-large in policy-making roles.

In addition to being a more accurate description for the Town governing body, the term “council” is nationally and internationally recognized, and is referred to in state statues as the governing body of a jurisdiction.
