Bass Lake Featured in Wildlife in North Carolina

Bass Lake Park, to open this spring, was featured in the April edition of Wildlife in North Carolina, a magazine published monthly by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

The one-page article, written by Jim Dean and entitled “Harry’s Lake,” overviews Bass Lake’s recent history, from when the author paid former lake-owner Harry Cornell to join his fishing club and gain access to the water.

The article also describes the recreation opportunities soon to be offered at the lake, including fishing. The lake, before its dam broke during Hurricane Fran, was a hot-spot for catching crappie, as well as the occasional bass and pickerel. Soon the new dam will be finished, and the lake will be filled and re-stocked with fish.

A handicapped accessible pier with fish attractors will be built. Gravel spawning beds and three solar-powered fish feeders will also be installed. The park will offer a community fishing program that provides fishing instruction and tackle to children who don’t own rods and reels.

“It’s a heckuva neat package, one that combines the preservation of unique natural spots with public recreation and special advantages for children who might not otherwise get an opportunity to catch fish,” Dean wrote.
