8/9/04 Bass Lake Park Open; Water Activities Pending Approval of Dam Lace your hiking boots and grab your fishing poles; Bass Lake Park is officially open! Although the lake level is nearly 4 feet low as the Town awaits the state’s approval on a permit to activate the dam, many activities at the park are available. Currently, park visitors can enjoy hiking the 1.25-mile mulch trail that snakes along the lakeshore and features scenic overlooks. The retreat center and park office are also open, as is the concession stand. Fishing is allowed from the shoreline, and already several large catfish have been caught. Once the state approves the permit to activate the dam and fill the lake, depending on rainfall, the lake could be full within a week. The park will then rent canoes and johnboats with trolling motors. The 90-acre Bass Lake Park is a more than $2 million project. More than $1 million of the funding is grant money from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, NC Water Resources and NC Trails. Additional money for the park was funded by business contributions, developer fees and other Town revenues. The park is open from 8 a.m.-sunset. For more information, call the Town Parks & Recreation Department at (919) 557-9600.
