Why would I want to change my zip code?

Fastest Response Times in Emergencies: Your current inaccurate zip code can cause confusion when emergency personnel are attempting to locate your home. Delays in emergency response times increase the opportunity for tragedy.

Better Utility Services: New residents have received disconnect notices from electric, cable and gas companies because the zip code of their property was not accurate. Utility bills were being sent with a Holly Springs zip code since the properties are located within that service area instead of the inaccurate zip code that is listed for the current address of the property.

More Convenient Postal Services: If you had a Holly Springs zip code, you would drive 1.5 miles to pick up vacation mail, packages, or certified or registered mail instead of at least 8.5 miles to the post office that services your current zip code.

Improvements in Other Services: Because of the inaccurate zip code, residents in your area have experienced problems trying to register to vote, to sign up for Town recreation programs, to register their vehicles and to obtain a driver’s license. Parcel delivery companies, such as UPS and FedEx, have refused to deliver packages to properties in your area because of the inaccurate zip codes. Residents have even had difficulty receiving annual property tax statements from the State because of the inaccurate zip codes.

Who is going to be surveyed?

The Town has identified roughly 550 mailing addresses that now have Apex and Fuquay-Varina zip codes. All of these addresses are serviced by Holly Springs fire and medical emergency response teams. Some of these addresses are within Holly Springs Town limits but have a different town listed as the address. Some of these addresses are not within the Town limits but still receive Holly Springs fire and medical emergency service. A sampling of these customers, as determined by the US Postal Service, will be surveyed.

If you have a post office box and do not receive mail at your address, you will not receive a survey unless you request one from your post office. A survey will be supplied to you from your post office upon your request.

Properties that are outside the Town of Holly Springs limits would not be annexed into Holly Springs if the zip code is modified. The Town of Holly Springs does not annex land without the property owner’s request, unless failing wells and septic tanks create a public health issue. However, should the property owner request to become part of a town, in order to develop the land or to connect with municipal utility services, that property could not become a part of any town other than Holly Springs because of State annexation laws and inter-local agreements between municipalities.

If the zip code is changed, does this mean I am going to be annexed into the Town of Holly Springs?

Absolutely not! Zip codes have nothing to do with annexation. The zip code modification is purely for public safety reasons and to provide a more accurate identity for the area, improving other residential services.

Furthermore, the Town of Holly Springs does not annex land without the property owner’s request, unless failing wells and septic tanks create a public health issue. If a property owner wishes to be incorporated as part of the Town of Holly Springs, the property owner should approach the Town and file a request for voluntary annexation.

If the zip code changes, will my property address change?

In most cases, the only change in address will be to the town name and to the zip code. However, on some properties along Holly Springs Road and Sunset Lake Road, the numeric portion of the street address may also change to make it consistent with other addresses along these roads, thus reducing confusion in emergencies and improving emergency response times.

How was my zip code established in the first place?

The US Postal Service establishes zip codes. Towns do not have any zip code assignment authorities. Since zip codes were established for this area decades ago, neighboring towns have grown dramatically, to the point of where becoming part of the town indicated by the zip code is now impossible.

When is the survey going to take place?

For areas included in the Fuquay-Varina zip code survey area (click here for map) surveys were sent on Dec. 3 , 2004, and the zip code change was approved. The effective date of the zip code change is April 2, 2005.

For areas included in the Apex zip code survey area (click here for map) surveys will be sent  by late April or May.   As details are known, information will be provided.

Who can I contact for more information?

For additional information, please contact Holly Springs Planning Department Director Gina Bobber at (919) 557-3908 or Gina.Bobber@hollyspringsnc.us. As additional information becomes available, updates will be made to this website.
