Widening Avent Ferry Road to a four-lane, median-divided roadway has been divided into two phases.
Phase 1 - N.C. 55 to Ralph Stevens Road (formerly Piney Grove Wilbon Road)
Town staff secured federal grant funding for design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction for 80 percent of projected costs.
The design includes a continuous green T-intersection, which allows vehicles on Avent Ferry Road to travel continuously from the bypass toward Ralph Stevens Road (formerly Piney Grove Wilbon Road) without stopping at the shopping center signal. Vehicles from the shopping center could turn left at the signal into a dedicated travel lane on Avent Ferry Road without disrupting the continuous flow of traffic from the bypass. Advertise for Construction: September, 2018
Bid Opening: October, 2018
Pending the bids received, construction is estimated to begin in November, 2018 and last about six months. The widening is estimated to open in May, 2019.
Phase 2 - Ralph Stevens Road (formerly Piney Grove Wilbon Road) to Cass Holt Road
Although Avent Ferry is a state-maintained road, the town has agreed to administer design, right-of-way acquisition and construction in order to begin construction more quickly. NCDOT will provide 100 percent of project funding, estimated at $8 million.
Town staff has received traffic forecasting documents and is soliciting a design consultant for initial survey and design. Once the design firm is selected, additional scheduling information will be determined.
